Shende Hall is the residence of Cao Zixue, the father of Cao Mingyuan, who was honored by the imperial court as a “filial and friendly” person. After Cao Mingyuan became a successful candidate in the imperial examination, he served as a county magistrate in Linchuan. Consequently, he specially constructed this house for his parents. The architecture follows the quintessential Huizhou-style “concave” layout, combining the main house and a guesthouse. Characterized by its compact and elegant in structure, versatile in function, tranquil and graceful environment, Shende Hall stands as one of the most refined dwellings in Huangling. The hall’s name, “Shende Hall,” conveys the message of caution and moral character, serving as a reminder to future generations in their actions.
